Discovering Your Business’ Master Referrers

The Referral Engine: Teaching Your Business to Market Itself (affiliate link), the subject of my last post, has inspired me to think more about who is best poised to make business referrals.

As a business owner, you should be on the prowl for that Master Referrer – a person who connects well with others and loves to chat up your brand. In some circles, this person might be called a “super user,” “ambassador,” or an “evangelist.”  If your business is worth its salt, you have a bunch of these people ready to pound the pavement for you.

Stuck on where to find these Master Referrers? Reflect a moment with these searching questions:

  • Which of your regular customers has given you a positive Yelp review?
  • Who has left you a five star rating on the “Reviews” tab of your Facebook Fan Page (an example here)?
  • Is there someone out there who consistently retweets you on Twitter?

If you don’t know these answers, take 15 minutes today to check out sites I refer to in this bulleted list. Then pick a day of the week and spend five minutes that day to scan those same sites. It’s important to know what people are saying about you … but it’s perhaps more important to know who is saying it.

Master Referrers can also be found offline. Has there been a customer who has brought a friend to the store because she thought the friend would “love it?” Do you know of anyone who has taken a flyer for one of your events or promotions to someone they know?

Smile wide when you see those people next. If you work it, they will be the lube for your referral engine.
